Folk art is made up of two words – folk + art. Therefore, to understand its literal meaning, we have to understand these two words separately. The word folk means the people. Actually, the word ‘folk’ represents a group of people or a community.

Thus, this art refers to the arts of the people. But now the question arises to whom the folk art is related?

In response to this, we can say that this art is related to the following:

  • The art of the people of the tribe,
  • Regional arts
  • Traditional and religious beliefs

Technique

Folk art is natural and full of simplicity in terms of technology. Its technique can be understood as follows:

  • Folk painters are not professionally trained. These painters take and pass on the tradition of painting from generation to generation.
  • One pattern is used in folk art. Any type of design or pattern inspired by nature is used.
  • In the figures, the surrounding environment, common life, animals, and birds, the uniformity in the depiction of gods and goddesses and the general shape is repeated again and again.
  • Folk art is depicted in two-dimensional 2D. Painting is done two-dimensionally on a flat floor (mostly on walls).
  • This art is mostly depicted on walls, objects of daily use, as compared to fine arts.
  • Only natural colors are used in the pictures. Bamboo or wooden cuttings or Kuchi (hand-made brushes) are used for applying the colors. Folk artists use traditional paintbrushes as compared to fine art brushes.
  • In this type of art, all the materials are hand-made.

इस कला के दायरे में वो सभी कलाएँ आती हैं जिनका आधार लोक संस्कृति से है। लोक संस्कृति के आधार पर अलग-अलग क्षेत्रों में अलग-अलग लोक कलाएँ देखने को मिलती हैं। लोक कलाओं की उत्पत्ति या चलन हर देश के क्षेत्रिय, परम्परागत व जनजातीय जीवन के आधार पर देखने को मिलता है।

अर्थ

लोक कला दो शब्दों से मिलकर बना है- लोक+कला। अतः इसके शाब्दिक अर्थ को जानने के लिए इन दो शब्दों को अलग-अलग समझना होगा। लोक शब्द का मतलब लोगों से होता है। लोक लोगों के समूह का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है।

इस प्रकार लोक कला का अर्थ लोगों की कलाओं से है। मगर अब प्रश्न ये उठता है कि लोक कला का सम्बन्ध किन लोगों की कलाएँ से है?

इसके जवाब में कहा जा सकता है की लोक कला का सम्बन्ध निम्नलिखित से है:

  1. जनजाति के लोगों की कला से
  2. क्षेत्रीय कलाओं से
  3. पारम्परिक व धार्मिक मान्यताओं से

इस प्रकार, लोक कला में जनजातियों की, क्षेत्रिय, पारम्परिक व धार्मिक कलाएँ आती है। यूँ भी कहा जा सकता है कि किसी भी प्रकार की जनजातीय कला, क्षेत्रिय कला व पारम्परिक धार्मिक कला लोक कला की श्रेणी में आएगी।

महत्वपूर्ण तथ्य

  • अनेक जातियों व जनजातियों में पीढ़ी दर पीढ़ी चली आ रही पारम्परिक कलाओं को लोक कला कहते हैं।
  • लोक कला लोक संस्कृति पर आधारित दृश्य-कला होती है।
  • लोगों के चले आ रहे रीति-रिवाज़ व प्रचलन लोक कला में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाते हैं।
  • लोगों के दैनिक जीवन का प्रतिबिम्ब लोक कला में देखने को मिलता है।
  • यह एक साधारण सी कला होती है किंतु सुंदरता व वास्तविकता लिए हुए है।

देश-विदेश व लोक कला

दुनिया भर में हर क्षेत्र व देश की कोई ना कोई अपनी लोक कला होती है। किसी भी देश की पहचान उसके लोक संस्कृति से होती है। अतः लोक संस्कृति में लोक कला भी एक महत्वपूर्ण भाग होता है। इस लिए हर देश में कोई ना कोई लोक कला पायी जाती है।

विकिपेड़िया के अनुसार दुनिया भर में पायी जानी वाली कुछ प्रमुख लोक कलाएँ इस प्रकार हैं:

  • अफ़्रीकन लोक कला
  • चीनी लोक कला
  • मिंहवा (कोरिया की लोक कला)
  • मिंजीए (Mingei) (जापानी लोक कला)
  • मक यांग (उत्तरी कोरिया प्रायद्वीप की लोक कला)
  • जनजातीय कला,
  • वरली चित्र(भारत)

ये तो सिर्फ़ चुनिंदा नाम हैं, वास्तव में अलग-अलग क्षेत्र व पारम्परिक सभ्यता के अनुसार कई प्रकार की लोक कलाएँ पायी जातीं हैं। भारत की ही अगर बात करें तो यहाँ कई लोक कलाएँ है जिनका उल्लेख आगे किया गया है।

तकनीक

तकनीक के मामले में लोक कला प्राकृतिक व सादगी से परिपूर्ण होती है। इसकी तकनीक को इस प्रकार समझा जा सकता है:

  • लोक चित्रकार पेशेवर रूप से प्रीशिक्षित नही होते। ये चित्रकार अपनी पीढ़ी दर पीढ़ी चित्रकारी की परम्परा को लेते व देते हैं।
  • लोक कला में एक से पैटर्न का प्रयोग किया जाता है। एक क़िस्म का कोई भी डिज़ाइन या प्रकृति से प्रेरित शृंखला का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
  • आकृतियों में, आस पास के वातावरण, सामान्य जनजीवन, पशु-पक्षियों, देवी-देवताओं के चित्रण में एकरूपता व सामान्य सा आकार बार बार दुहराया जाता है।
  • लोक कला द्वि-आयामी २D चित्रित की जाती है। सपाट तल पर (अधिकतर दीवारों पर) चित्रकारी द्वि-आयामी रूप से की जाती है।
  • ललित कलाओं की तुलना में लोक कला का चित्रण अधिकतर दीवारों पर, दैनिक प्रयोग की वस्तुओं पर किया जाता है।  
  • चित्रों में प्राकृतिक रंगो का ही प्रयोग किया जाता है। रंगों के लगाने के लिए बांस या लकड़ी की कलमों या कुची का प्रयोग किया जाता है। ललित कला के ब्रशों की तुलना में लोक कलाकार पारम्परिक तूलिका का प्रयोग करते हैं।
  • इस प्रकार की कलाओं में सभी सामग्री हस्त-निर्मित प्रयोग की जाती है।

भारतीय लोक कलाएँ

भारत एक विविधताओं वाला देश है। क्षेत्र व भाषा की दृष्टि से यहाँ विभिन्न प्रकार की लोक सांस्कृतिक परम्परायें  पायी जातीं है। अतः यहाँ लोक कलायें भी कई प्रकार की पायी जातीं है। इन लोक कलाओं में निम्नलिखित लोक कलाएँ प्रमुख हैं:

  • मधुबनी
  • वरली
  • पतुआ कला
  • पट-चित्र
  • कलमकारी
  • अल्पना
  • गोंड
  • अन्य  

निष्कर्ष

आधुनिकता के इस युग में हम अपनी परम्परागत उपयोगी लोक संस्कृति व विरासत को देख कर सकूँ व आनंद को महसूस करते हैं। कुछ लोक कलाओं ने तो आज इतना प्रभावित किया है कि उनका प्रयोग हमारी हर दैनिक चीजों पर देखने को मिलता है। उदाहरण के लिए वरली कला को ही ले लीजिए। वरली कला के चित्र आज कपड़ों पर, बर्तनों पर, हर सजावटी चीजों पर यहाँ तक की पुस्तकों व दीवारों पर बहुत प्रचलित हैं।

संक्षिप्त में कहें तो लोक कला में प्रकृति व सादगी के दर्शन होते हैं। कहीं ना कहीं ये हमारी विरासत व संस्कृति का प्रतिनिधित्व करते हैं। आधुनिकता के इस दौर में लोगों का लोक कला के प्रति रुझान व रुचि का लगातार बढ़ना एक शुभ संकेत है। हमें अपनी जड़ें व लोक जीवन को कभी भूलना नही चाहिए।
